Jerome Joint School District No. 261

SCHOOL FACILITIES 9800

COMMEMORATIVE NAMING OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS AND/OR FACILITIES

The Jerome School District Board of Trustees recognizes that respect and gratitude for individuals who have made significant contributions to Joint Jerome School District #261 may be expressed by naming a school building and/or facility in honor of those individuals. Acknowledgement in this manner perpetuates the memory of the contribution and provides a sense of history for future students, staff, and residents.

Any building or facility may be designated to be named. Names may include a living or deceased person who has made significant contributions to the district through longevity of service, exemplary leadership, philanthropic contributions or other significant means.

Procedures

All requests for the naming of facilities, auditoriums, libraries, and grounds must be presented to the

Superintendent through a formal letter with the reason(s) for the request. The written request shall contain at

minimum the rationale for the recognition, biographical history of the individual, the significant contribution, and the number of years of association with school, district, or program

A committee will be appointed by the Superintendent for each request. The committee will consist of seven

members to include at least: Two Board Members, two community representatives, one district representative, a

representative from the club or activity which is directly affected, and one administrator. The Superintendent may appoint more than seven members to the committee, as long as the total number of voting members is an odd number. The committee has the responsibility to review any requests submitted in writing, study the impact of the requested recognition on the school, the district, and community. The committee will make a recommendation to the Jerome School District Board of Trustees for the acceptance or rejection of the request.

Guidelines

A. Names of distinguished citizens or former Jerome School District employees may be considered.

B. Names of living or deceased individuals may be considered.

C. To eliminate spontaneous or emotional response, nominations will not typically be considered until two

years after the service, contribution, or death.

D. The individual must have made a significant positive impact on the school, district, or activity.

E. Names of Jerome School District personnel will not be considered while actively employed either full time, part-time, or as a consultant, nor for two years from the last day of employment.

F. Names of Board members may not be considered while actively serving on the Board of Trustees, nor for two years from the last day of service.

G. Names of elected officials will not be considered while they are actively serving in public office, nor for

two years from the last day of their term of service as an elected official.

Rescinding or Removing Name of Building or Facility

A. The Jerome School District Board of Trustees recognizes that the official name selected for an educational facility is a vital factor in the public image of the school system. The honor and integrity of the name selected reflects upon both the school district and educational facility. With these concerns in mind, the Board of Trustees may consider action to rescind an approved name of an educational facility. A committee, as described above for naming purposes, will bring a recommendation to the Board of Trustees to either keep the existing name or rescind the name.

B. The Board of Trustees reserves the right to place time limits on the naming of facilities particularly when there is private funding through individuals, corporations, or foundations.
