Jerome Joint School District No. 261
CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION 2550
Field Trips, Excursions and Outdoor Education
Trips of Significant Educational Value
The Board recognizes that field trips, when used as a device for teaching and learning integral to the curriculum, are an educationally sound and important ingredient in the instructional program of the schools. Such trips of
significant educational value can supplement and enrich classroom procedures by providing learning experiences in an environment beyond the classroom and will be encouraged. The Board also recognizes that field trips may
result in lost learning opportunities in missed classes. Therefore, the Board endorses the use of field trips when
the educational objectives achieved by the trip clearly outweigh any lost in-class learning opportunities.
To secure maximum educational value from a field experience, students will be oriented for the trip in advance.
The teacher will provide adequate follow-up and tie-in of experiences in the field with classroom activities and
discussion after the trip that enhance its usefulness.
Transportation cost for trips of significant educational value will be borne by the district.
Trips of Significant Recreational Value
Pupil trips of significant recreational value will be permitted when they are conducted under requirements
established the Board of Trustees. Pupil safety on trips will be a primary consideration.
Transportation costs for trips of significant recreational value will be borne by the students and/or their parents or
guardians.
All Trips
All trips must be approved by the school principal. The superintendent and Board of Trustees must approve all
overnight or out-of-state student trips in advance of their occurring. State competitions, sponsored or
approved by Idaho High School Activities Association IHSAA, which require overnight stay, do not require
additional board approval.
Building principals shall develop procedures for the operation of a field trip.
No staff member may solicit students during instructional time for any privately arranged field trip or excursion
without Board permission.
Written parental approval must be obtained for each trip. The signed forms showing parental approval will be
retained for one year.
Trips shall be supervised by a minimum of one school district employee. Trips involving only one student should be
avoided.
